๐Ÿ’น (English) Familiar Names, Yet Unfamiliar Stories

Reading โ€œAn Introduction to Norse Mythologyโ€

Image

๐Ÿ“– Book Title: An Introduction to Norse Mythology
โœ๏ธ Author: Lee Kyung-deok
๐ŸŽฏ Recommended for: Anyone whoโ€™s heard the names but wants to understand the stories behind them!
๐ŸŒŸ One-Line Impression: Feels like a raw, unpolished version of Greco-Roman myths!?

๐Ÿ”ค More Familiar Names Than You Think!?

While reading this book, a lot of old memories came back!

  • Asgard: A game I used to love from Nexon!
  • Ragnarok: The title of a game my friend used to play non-stop.
  • Odin, Thor, Loki, Heimdall: The gods we met through Marvel movies!
  • Valkyrie: The air unit from StarCraftโ€™s Terran faction!
  • The Lord of the Rings: The fantasy film I watched when I was a kidโ€ฆ

Come to think of it, we might be living surrounded by fragments of Norse mythology.
Yet, very few people really know the actual stories behind those names.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ The Mythology We Know: Greco-Roman!

Letโ€™s be honest โ€” when someone says โ€œmythology,โ€ what comes to mind first?

Zeus and the 12 Olympians, Hera, Poseidon, Aphrodite, Hermesโ€ฆ

Greco-Roman mythology is familiar because its characters are polished and structured,
and itโ€™s closely tied to literature, art, and philosophy.

๐ŸงŠ Norse Mythologyโ€ฆ Wild and Raw?

What I felt while reading An Introduction to Norse Mythology was:

Each character certainly has their own personality,
but overall, the storytelling feels raw and unrefined โ€” in a primal way.

  • Less of a chronological flow, more of scattered episodes
  • The gods arenโ€™t neatly defined โ€” they can be ambiguous or unstable
  • While there is a general arc (from the creation of the world to Ragnarok),
the overall narrative feels loose and fragmented

At the same time, I realized:
Maybe Greco-Roman myths became what they are now through centuries of editing, polishing, and romanticizing.

๐Ÿ“˜ How Was the Reading Experience?

Honestly, I liked that it wasnโ€™t too heavy.
Even if you know nothing about mythology โ€” or you just vaguely remember the names โ€”
youโ€™ll find yourself thinking:

โ€œAh, so this is the backstory behind the Marvel characters!โ€

Itโ€™s light but insightful, with bite-sized explanations and the authorโ€™s own interpretations.
A pleasant read overall.

โœ… Final Thoughts

An Introduction to Norse Mythology is exactly that โ€”
an encounter with the unfamiliar stories behind familiar names.

Within the rough edges of its tales, I felt the raw instinct of nature, war, humanity, and death.
I even began to understand why Norse mythology never gained the same global popularity as its Greco-Roman cousin.

๐Ÿ“š Curious about mythology?
โœ”๏ธ Tired of the same old polished Greek stories?
โ†’ Give Norse mythology a shot โ€” itโ€™s wild, strange, and beautifully chaotic.
