😅 어렵다,..,

처음 책을 펼쳤을 때의 당혹감이 아직도 잊을 수가 없다,,,
글자 하나하나는 한글이기에 모를리가 없는데, 그 의미를 이해하기가 너무나 어려웠다.
‘내가 집중을 못하나?’ 하는 생각에 몇 번이고 다시 읽어보았지만, 결국 이해하기 어려운 것이 맞았다.,.

아래는 책에서 발췌한 한 구절입니다.

또 실천적 지혜는 성격의 탁월성에 결부되며, 성격의 탁월성 또한 실천적 지혜에 결부된다.
실천적 지혜의 원리가 성격적 탁월성에 따라 주어지며, 성격적 탁월성의 옮음이 실전적 지혜에 따라 주어지기 때문이다.

이런 문장들을 보면서 ‘철학책은 역시 쉽지 않구나’라는 생각을 하게 되었다.

📝 그래서 주제는!?

우선 책의 제목 『니코마코스 윤리학』 을 다시 한 번 생각해보자!
잘 이해가 되지 않음을 깨달았다 ㅎㅎ

니코마코스란!! 두가지 설이 있다.

1. 아리스토텔레스가 아들 니코마코스에게 남긴 윤리학 강의록이라는 뜻
2. 『니코마코스 윤리학』은 아리스토텔레스 사후에 정리된 것으로 보이기에, 그의 아들 또는 제자인 니코마코스가 편집자 역할을 하여 “니코마코스가 정리한 윤리학”이라는 의미로 해석

그래서 이 책은 행복한 삶을 위한 지혜가 주제였다고 한다!!

기억에 남은것은 중간만 하자 라는 ‘중용’의 개념이었다.

모든 좋음은 과도함과 부족함 사이의 적절한 중간점에 있다는 것으로, 이는 단순히 산술적인 중간이 아닌, 상황과 맥락에 따른 ‘최적의 상태’를 의미한다.

⚖️ 중용(中庸)의 덕, 적당함의 중요성!

• 용기란, 무모함과 비겁함 사이의 ‘절제된 상태’
• 관대함은, 낭비와 인색함 사이에서 ‘균형 잡힌 기부’
• 감정과 행동 모두, 상황과 이성을 고려한 적절함이 중요

중용은 아무거나 ‘중간’을 택하는 게 아니라,
상황에 맞는 ‘올바른 타이밍, 방식, 강도’의 선택이다.

요즘식 표현으로 선을 넘지 안으면서 적당히 하는것 이라고 이해했다!

이 책을 읽으며 느낀 솔직한 소감을 정리해보면:

😅 It’s difficult,..,

I still can’t forget the bewilderment when I first opened the book,,, Since each character was in Korean, I should have understood it, but it was so hard to grasp the meaning. I read it over and over again thinking ‘Am I not focusing enough?’, but in the end, it was just difficult to understand.,.

Here’s an excerpt from the book:

Also, practical wisdom is bound to excellence of character, and excellence of character is likewise bound to practical wisdom. This is because the principles of practical wisdom are given according to character excellence, and the rightness of character excellence is given according to practical wisdom.

Looking at sentences like these made me realize that ‘philosophy books are indeed not easy.’

📝 So what’s the theme!?

First, let’s think about the title “Nicomachean Ethics” again! I realized I didn’t understand it well haha

About Nicomachus!! There are two theories.

1. It means ethics lectures that Aristotle left for his son Nicomachus
2. Since “Nicomachean Ethics” appears to have been organized after Aristotle’s death, it’s interpreted as “Ethics organized by Nicomachus” as his son or disciple Nicomachus acted as editor

So this book’s main theme was wisdom for a happy life!!

What I remember most was the concept of ‘moderation’ which means ‘stay in the middle.’

All goodness lies in the appropriate middle point between excess and deficiency, which doesn’t mean a simple arithmetic mean, but rather the ‘optimal state’ according to situation and context.

⚖️ The Virtue of the Mean, The Importance of Moderation!

• Courage is a ‘controlled state’ between recklessness and cowardice
• Generosity is ‘balanced giving’ between wastefulness and stinginess
• In both emotions and actions, appropriateness considering situation and reason is important

The mean is not about choosing just any ‘middle ground,’ But about choosing the ‘right timing, method, and intensity’ suitable for the situation

In modern terms, I understood it as doing things moderately without crossing the line!

  • Proud of not giving up despite the difficulty Disappointing that I don’t remember much even after finishing it
• The Uniqueness of Philosophy Books 🤔
  • Not only was the text difficult, but the commentary was no easier
  • An opportunity to experience the depth of philosophical thinking

Although it wasn’t an easy read, I believe such challenging reading will somehow deepen our thinking, even if unconsciously!!!
