This story is well known as a children’s tale and as the inspiration behind the Korean film Masquerade (Gwanghae).
However, it was my first time actually reading the original novel.
To put it simply—it truly lives up to its reputation.
The story was engaging from the beginning, and the characters and plot developments were so compelling that I read it in one sitting.
It was a perfect book to read under the warm sunlight of May. The feelings and the sunlight were both warm.
🧠 An Intriguing Perspective on the Author
After finishing the book, I suddenly thought of rereading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, whose contents I had forgotten from childhood.
That’s how much Mark Twain’s worldview left a strong impression on me.
In the latter part of the book, there was an interpretation of the author and the work.
His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, born in a small town in Missouri, USA,
and he later received an honorary doctorate from Oxford University.

☀️ 따뜻한 봄날, 따뜻한 책
어린이 동화로도 잘 알려져 있고, 한국 영화 <광해>의 모티브로도 유명한 이 이야기. 하지만 정작 원작 소설을 처음 읽어보게 되었다.
결론부터 말하자면, 정말 “명불허전”이었다.
초반부터 몰입감이 강했고, 캐릭터와 사건 전개 모두 흥미로워 단숨에 읽어 내려갔다.
따뜻한 5월 햇살 아래에서 읽기에 더없이 좋은 책이었다. 감정도, 햇살도 같이 따뜻했다.
🧠 작가에 대한 흥미로운 해석
책을 다 읽고 나니 문득 어릴 적 읽었던, 내용을 잊어버린 『허클베리 핀의 모험』, 『톰 소여의 모험』 를 다시 한 번 읽어보는것도 좋다고 생각했다.
그만큼 작가 마크 트웨인의 세계관이 인상 깊었다.
책 뒷부분에는 작가와 작품에 대한 해석이 실려 있었는데,
그의 본명은 새뮤얼 랭혼 클레먼스, 미국 미주리 주의 작은 마을 출신이었고,
나중에는 옥스퍼드 대학교 명예박사를 받은 인물이기도 했다.
이처럼 극단적인 두 신분 사이의 정체성에 대한 고민이 ‘왕자와 거지’라는 설정에 반영된 것은 아닐까?
