๐Ÿ’ก A Wound Left by a Factory

A Review of โ€œThe Story of Janesvilleโ€

Image

  • Book Title: The Story of Janesville
  • Author: Amy Goldstein
  • Recommended for: Anyone interested in social non-fiction, or reflecting on the roles of economics and labor
  • My Takeaway: โ€œThrough the collapse of a once-thriving town, I faced the instability of our own society.โ€

๐Ÿง I Thought It Was a Novel, But It Was a Documentary

When I first picked up the book, I thought it would be a personal narrative like J.D. Vanceโ€™s Hillbilly Elegy. However, as I turned the pages, I realized it was not a personal story, but a massive documentary. It was a vivid record of the town of Janesville, Wisconsin, and the lives of its residents after the GM plant left, setting the town on a path of decline.

The lives of those who lost their jobs at the GM plant and related businesses are laid out in a matter-of-fact way. Following their despair and their efforts to rebuild, I was forced to reconsider how much a single corporate decision can shake the lives of individuals, and how crucial employment is to a community.

๐Ÿ˜… A Slightly Different Feeling from a Korean Perspective

As I read, I sympathized with them, but a different feeling also crept in. We live with constant anxiety about the future and feel pressured to engage in continuous self-development. Seeing their relaxed livesโ€”the belief that a single job after high school could guarantee a comfortable life foreverโ€”a cold question crossed my mind: โ€œIs this not just the weak lament of those who lived too comfortable a life?โ€

But that doubt quickly faded. This wasnโ€™t a matter of their weakness. It was a universal human struggleโ€”how to cope with the chaos that ensues when a familiar system suddenly collapses. Ultimately, instead of asking if they were โ€œweak,โ€ the book seemed to pose a different question: in the face of immense change, what should we be prepared for?

โœ… My Final Thoughts

The Story of Janesville is not just a book about a corporate shutdown and the resulting unemployment.

  • Unprepared for Change: It shows how vulnerable individuals and societies can become when their familiar way of life crumbles.
  • The Value of Labor: It helps you realize that a job is not just a means of living but has a profound impact on a personโ€™s identity and dignity.
  • A Question for Us: Is our society, which lives with continuous self-improvement and anxiety, truly safe?

This book is more than just an โ€œAmerican story.โ€ It serves as a warning about the uncertain future we all might face and offers an opportunity for deep reflection.

I was able to understand why so many Americans in the Rust Belt respond to MAGA.
