๐Ÿ’ก (English) Happiness Was Inside Me All Along

Reading *Be Happy on Your Own*

Image
๐Ÿ“– Book Title: Be Happy on Your Own
โœ๏ธ Author: Beopjeong (Venerable Beopjeong)
๐ŸŽฏ Recommended for: Anyone feeling emotionally overwhelmed, curious about a minimalist, tranquil life
๐ŸŒŸ One-line impression: โ€œHappiness isnโ€™t out there โ€” itโ€™s always been within me.โ€

๐Ÿง˜ What Does It Feel Like to Live as a Monk?

Through this book, I got a vivid glimpse into the life of โ€œnon-possessionโ€ that Venerable Beopjeong practiced.
A life that wandered freely without attachment, with nature as his constant companion โ€”
it was so far from my own reality, and perhaps because of that, felt even more deeply desirable.

He carried almost nothing, and it was that very lightness that deepened his mind.

As I read, I found myself not thinking about a โ€œway of life,โ€ but a โ€œway of being.โ€

๐Ÿ˜… A Cute Moment of โ€œMonk Logicโ€

At one point in the book, the monk says,
no water or electricity should be connected to the hut where he lived.
But a few paragraphs later, he casually mentions that he did have water piped in to his own residence.

It made me chuckle โ€”

โ€œAh, Beop-ro-nam-bul! (Beopjeongโ€™s version of โ€˜rules for thee but not for meโ€™? ๐Ÿ˜„)โ€

Still, I found it endearing in its honesty, not hypocritical.
Rather than portraying an unattainable ideal, it felt like a transparent and sincere confession of a spiritual practitioner.

๐Ÿ’ญ โ€œHappiness Is Inside Meโ€

The most powerful message in the book was this:

Happiness isnโ€™t far away.
Itโ€™s always been within me.

I deeply agreed with that sentiment โ€”
and yet, at the same time, I felt a hint of fear.

In this fiercely competitive world,
if I focus only on inner happiness,
would I end up like one of those small Pacific island nations swallowed up by Western powers?

What if I, too, get swept away by the tide of modern life?

I thought to myself:

Maybe I still have a long way to go in my own spiritual training.

โœ… Final Thoughts

Be Happy on Your Own wasnโ€™t just a book of comforting words.
It posed a far more fundamental question:
How do I want to live my life?

  • A way of being with nature ๐ŸŒฟ
    • A life untouched by external noise, centered in inner peace
    • One that sees meaning in both departure and stillness
  • A mix of gentle humor and deep reflection ๐Ÿ˜Š
    • Even his story about water brought in to his hut felt sincere and human
    • It added warmth to his wisdom
  • A book that repositions happiness ๐Ÿง˜
    • Not something to chase outside, but something to find inside
    • Yet it honestly admits how hard that path can be

The phrase โ€œBe happy on your ownโ€ isnโ€™t just advice.
Itโ€™s a truth โ€” and a responsibility we must all accept.
